Accommodation in Morocco ranges from friendly budget homestays or hostels to expensive, top-of-the-market luxury riads (traditional courtyard houses), country estates and grand converted palaces. Inbetween are charming midrange maisons d’hôtes (small hotels) and riads that predominate in the larger cities such as Fez and Marrakesh. Like anywhere that caters to a European summer-holiday crowd, the Moroccan coast also has its fair share of oversized tourist complexes, while budget travellers may also come across individuals’ houses converted in the dead of night without the appropriate licenses.
